It used to be that when people mentioned a 2d scrolling game, it was a throwback game ie; a retro gamer. These days, however, it seems like everytime a new game comes out it has the chance of becoming a 2d titled scroller.
There is a new “trend” out now though that is starting to be a comeback; and its a welcome one, 3d platformers. These types of games are built around a giant world to explore, lots of unique locations, and they give you the ability to go on a new adventure every time. If you like 3d platformer games or enjoy the nostalgia of these types of games, these are just a few that you should consider playing and buying!
Super Mario Odyssey
Yea yea, it was pretty obvious this one was going to be on the list. Its freaking Mario you guys! This is pretty much THE hero everyone thinks about when the word 3d platformer is mentioned! “Mario embarks on a new journey through unknown worlds, running and jumping through huge 3D worlds in the first sandbox-style Mario game since Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Set sail between expansive worlds aboard an airship, and perform all-new actions, such as throwing Mario’s cap.” This one is ONLY available on the Switch unfortunately. But it doesn’t come out until October 27th so you still have plenty of time as a Switch user to pre-order.
Crash Bandicoot: The N. Sane Trilogy
If you love 3d platformers, chances are you’ve already played this one. Crash Bandicoot: The N. Sane Trilogy just released a remastered edition which includes all new updated graphics, 3 “games” which includes crash the original, cortex strikes back and warped. This one is only being released on Playstation 4, however, there have been some MAJOR rumors that it will be released in 2017 for the XBox One as well. Personally, I would buy this in a second if it came out for the Xbox One!
I wrote about this one awhile back when there was a leak about it being created. This is yet another game that I plan on purchasing in 2018 (2017 is too damn crazy with pre-orders and other games!). Its available for the Xbox One and Playstation 4. Not really sure why they didn’t release a PC version that was a physical edition, but there is a digital edition so that sort of makes up for it, but I am sure it will come down the line at some point. This is a really fun looking 3d platformer. It actually reminds me a lot of Crash, Sonic, and Mario all wrapped up into one spectacular game. “Yooka-Laylee is a new open-world platformer from genre veterans Playtonic! Explore huge, beautiful worlds, meet (and beat) an unforgettable cast of characters and horde a vault-load of shiny collectibles as buddy-duo Yooka (the green one) and Laylee (the bat with the big nose) embark on an epic adventure to thwart corporate creep Capital B!”
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
I know this one came out a few months ago, but I am still including it on this 3d platformer game list because its an awesome game; tons of fun, its a 3d platformer, I really like the graphics and the gameplay. My cousin has the Switch so he let me borrow it for a week and I played the heck out of this game! “Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is the full and complete edition of Shovel Knight, a sweeping classic action adventure game series with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic! Become Shovel Knight, wielder of the Shovel Blade, as he runs, jumps, and battles in a quest for his lost beloved. Take down the nefarious Knights of the Order of No Quarter and their menacing leader, The Enchantress. But that’s not everything! Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove also features three additional campaigns that are games all unto themselves!”
This also includes the Specter Of Torment so that definitely needs to be considered!
I know this was a short list but more 3d platformers are coming out this year so who knows, maybe I’ll update it down the line when more become available.
