Shadow of the Colossus – Review Round Up!

Shadow of the Colossus doesn’t release until tomorrow, but a lot of people have already gotten their hands on the game. If you were still on the fence about Shadow of the Colossus or you want to see what some of these review websites are saying about the game, then you definitely need to check out the reviews below.

As per always, you’ll see the name of the website reviewer, their score (if there is one) and their review.

I will say that around 15 websites gave it a 10/10 right off the bat.

Giorgos Kallifas – Game Over – 10/10

“An artistic and gaming triumph! BluePoint Games has delivered a superb remake that is absolutely faithful to the original masterpiece by Ueda-san and his team. Even if you’ve played and finished the original game or the HD remake for the PS3, you should definitely consider playing this version as well as it is the most beautiful of all.”

Allen – Dark Station – 10/10

“Rebuilt for a new generation, Bluepoint has created a stunning tribute to one of the best video game experiences on the PlayStation. I haven’t seen a quality remake of a game like this since Capcom’s Resident Evil REmake. And now that the visuals finally match Shadow of the Colossus’ grandeur and scope, there’s no better time to play it for the first time–or third, fourth, or fifth.”

Stefan L – The Sixth Axis – 10/10

“Shadow of the Colossus isn’t necessarily a game that needed to be remade in such an elaborate fashion, and yet, I’m so glad that it has been. Bluepoint’s remake of this sublime and poignant adventure is phenomenal, both managing to stay utterly true to the original and bringing it up to date in glorious fashion.”

Matt Kamen – Trusted Reviews – 10/10

“Still one of the finest games ever coded, and now fit to be seen on top line TVs. This is how remasters should be done, bringing the original content up to modern standards, without diluting what made it great in the first place. Bluepoint has effectively improved on perfection.”

Matt S. – Digitally Downloaded – 10/10

“Shadow of the Colossus is, in a way, overwhelming. It’s not just that the beasts that you are fighting are so massive, and the challenge in taking them on with nothing but a sword and bow can, at first, seem monumental. It’s overwhelming for its emotive power, its rich themes, and its uncompromising vision. There’s nothing genuinely like Shadow of the Colossus out there, and hopefully, this new, pretty version, as superficial as that prettiness is to what makes the game so important, encourages a new generation of players to try it for themselves.”

Chandler Wood – Playstation Lifestyle – 10/10

“Whether you’re climbing a colossus for the first time, or revisiting an old friend a decade later, the legacy lives on. Shadow of the Colossus is even more amazing today than it was when it first released and earns itself a spot as a must-own for anyone with a PS4. I’ve never been as enamored with this game as I am in 2018. Bluepoint Games has successfully honored the original while completely making it their own, a balancing act that only the most devoted of fans could pull off. It’s awe-inspiring. It’s colossal. It’s the perfect remake. It’s Shadow of the Colossus exactly as I remember it, yet it’s Shadow of the Colossus-like it’s never been before.’

Marty Sliva – IGN – 9.7 out of 10

“The true definition of a classic, the gameplay, and story of Shadow of the Colossus are every bit as great and emotional today as they were in 2005. This outstanding remaster skillfully enhances those qualities with improved controls, performance, and sheer graphical beauty. It remains one of the best PlayStation games ever made, and it’s wonderful that Sony has brought it back to the fore so a new generation of gamers can experience it without having to look past its aged facade.”

Chris Plante – Polygon – 9.5 out of 10

“I’ve come to appreciate the realistic look of Colossus, which felt crass at first, but has over time expressed a warmth that I never quite felt from its predecessor. But it’s still respectful, recognizing that, however great the visuals, the magic is under the surface.”

Kyle Hilliard – Game Informer – 9 out of 10

“The original Shadow of the Colossus is easily one of my favorite games. It was among the first that made me want to violently point at the screen and yell, “Look! Video games are art!” at anyone within earshot. Bluepoint’s remake feels different in some respects but is exactly like Shadow of the Colossus in the important ways. Scaling beasts feels appropriately epic, and the few story moments that exist still tell a heart-wrenching tale of sacrifice in the face of impossible odds.”

Edmond Tran – Game Spot – 9 out of 10

“Shadow of the Colossus is a tremendous journey, and one well worth taking and retaking. The visual overhaul is stunning, thoroughly enhancing every facet of Wander and Agro’s excellent adventure. Galloping through the tranquil world is always breathtaking; felling a monumental colossus is always humbling. Shadow of the Colossus is a beautiful reconstruction of an already exceptional title. It continues to be a modern classic and is an extraordinary game that everyone must experience.”

Even before the game came out, people were calling this game a sure thing.  Its pretty obvious to see from the reviews above that its a very popular game, with tons of activities to do – and its definitely updated in terms of graphics from the original game.

Later on this week when reviews from users start to be released I’ll add those to the collection.   In the meantime if you’re feeling buyers remorse for not taking the plunge, you technically still have today to pre-order.
